Theatre

The Department of Theatre & Dance

The Theatre program at UNM integrates a dynamic liberal arts education with rigorous practical training. Theatre is seen as an extension of the humanities, a mode of critical inquiry and creative expression. The program emphasizes interdisciplinarity, collaborative creation, and community engagement.

Students have many opportunities to hone their craft and technical skills in our departmental production season, which includes three faculty and two student-directed performances as well as the Linnell Festival of New Plays.  We support Tricklock Company’s international theatre festival, Revolutions, which brings prominent artists to Albuquerque for three weeks each year providing students with access to global performance.

The Theatre program regularly hosts artist residencies that give students an opportunity to work with distinguished artists from around the world. Some of our most recent visiting artists and intellectuals include: Guillermo Gómez-Peña and Balitronica Gómez of La Pocha Nostra; Gloria Miguel (Kuna/Rappahannock) of Spiderwoman Theater; Raven Chacon (Diné), Cristóbal Martínez (Mexica), and Kade L. Twist (Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma) of Postcommodity; Rhiana Yazzie (Diné), Ty Defoe (Oneida/Ojibwe), Reed Adair Bobroff (Diné); Alejandro Tomás Rodriguez (Argentina), Robin Gentien (France), and Pierre Lauth-Karson (France/US) of Engine; Dito Van Reigersberg and Dan Rothenberg of Pig Iron Theatre Company, Lana Lesley of the Rude Mechs, David Woods and Jon Haynes of Ridiculusmus, Migdalia Cruz, Caridad Svich, Mónica Palacios, Erik Ehn, and Mac Wellman.
