The Department of Theatre & Dance is pleased to feature the second edition of In 2 The Void, created and produced by François Achan. The Jam, which also serves as the students’ final, brings all four elements of Hip-Hop under one roof, culminating in an energy-filled celebration of Hip-Hop culture.

François writes: “As the instructor, I see the Jam as the only true way to educate my students on the genre. Hip-Hop is something that you learn through experience and interaction. Not just the experiences you gain in a class or interactions you have with the department, but the actual community as a whole. There’s no way to give a test on something you have to experience, so I sought to make the experience the test. The students have to take what they’ve learned throughout the semester and apply it in a social Hip-Hop setting, while sharing the space with real Hip-Hop artists.”

This year’s In 2 The Void deepens the integration between the Theatre & Dance Department and the greater Albuquerque Hip-Hop community. The Jam attracts artists from across the country—including the Bay Area, Los Angeles, Houston, El Paso, New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Santa Fe, Denver, Colorado Springs, Seattle, Portland, and Chicago—who travel to Albuquerque to express themselves as artists, build community, and help give UNM students a Hip-Hop experience they will not forget.

The event includes competitive battles with cash prizes: a 2v2 Breakin’ battle ($1,500) and a 1v1 Hip-Hop battle ($500). This year’s judges are distinguished figures in the field: Kwik-Step, Rokafella, Box-Won, Check-It, Holo-Type, and Montse, all of whom bring deep artistic and community-based experience to the event.

The Jam is taking place in the Elizabeth Waters Center for Dance in the South Arena.
