Nutritional Cooking and Education at UNM’s North Valley Family Health Clinic

In the fall of 2017 Arts-In-Medicine partnered with the UNM’s Family Health Clinic in the North Valley to create a nutritional cooking initiative that would enhance the clinic’s already established Food Pantry Program.

Every week the clinic’s Food Pantry Program distributes 500 pounds of free, fresh fruit and vegetables to their low-income patients. To build on this program we offered nutritional education and taught healthy cooking practices to patients and staff through cooking demonstrations, recipe sharing, and nutritional information.

Each week special dishes were prepared and served in order to introduce less common produce distributed by the Food Pantry. To further promote an environment of engagement and community sharing we brought one of our wonderful musicians, Chuck Hawley, to perform at these sessions. Currently scheduling private group visits.
