UNM Theatre and Dance Presents Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night
– Featuring Intergenerational Mentorship and Collaboration
The University of New Mexico’s Department of Theatre and Dance is thrilled to present William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, a rich and complex comedy of love, mistaken identity, and transformation. First performed in 1601, Twelfth Night remains one of Shakespeare’s most popular works, known for its mix of wit, pathos, and delightful twists.
Set in the mythical land of Illyria, the story revolves around a love triangle: Viola, disguised as a man, serves Duke Orsino, who is in love with the noble Lady Olivia. However, Olivia falls for Viola in disguise, creating a tangled web of mistaken identity and unrequited love. Alongside this, the play features the comical trickery of the self-righteous steward Malvolio, and the bond between Antonio and Sebastian, which evolves into a new love interest for Olivia.
This production of Twelfth Night includes special collaboration with key UNM faculty. Harris Smith, Dean of the College of Fine Arts, contributed to the stage direction, bringing his expertise in performance and staging to the production, and working with students to refine their stage combat. Donna Jewell, Head of the Dance Program, provided movement direction and choreographed a section of the play, helping to inform the physicality of the play. Their involvement shows the dedication of UNM Faculty to collaborate, mentor, and create for many different projects and productions.
While Twelfth Night is full of laugh-out-loud moments, it’s also marked by the poignant fall of characters like Malvolio and Antonio, whose stories take a somber turn after the play’s many comedic highs. Yet, the emotional storminess of the plot ultimately gives way to a joyous conclusion, as misunderstandings are resolved, disguises are unmasked, and a joyful double wedding takes place, accompanied by Feste’s memorable song, “Heigh Ho, the Wind and the Rain.”
This unique production is not to be missed, with a blend of humor, music, dance, and added collaboration from UNM faculty, bringing new life to one of Shakespeare’s most beloved plays.
