Eleven New Works to Set Stage at UNM
ALBUQUERQUE, NM – The University of New Mexico Department of Theatre and Dance is proud to present “Vorsicht” – an evening of new choreographic works from students at the University of New Mexico. The Student Dance Concerts, presented every fall and spring semester, have always been a cornerstone of the UNM Dance Department, as it offers students a chance to develop their own artistic voice, and present works to an audience, some of them for the first time.
“Working on my pieces for ‘Vorsicht’ has been an amazing experience” says Riley Swinney, a UNM Dance Major in Contemporary who is presenting two pieces: Chaotic Waves and Hurting Together. “It has given me the chance to expand on my creativity and explore mo ements that may be out of my comfort zone. This experience is allowing me to grow as a choreographer.”
The choreographers for each concert are selected through an audition process during which they are mentored by a member of the UNM Dance Faculty. After selection, the choreographers attend production meetings and work with a lighting designer to bring their full vision to life. The Student Dance Concerts a way to immerse students in a full dance concert and prepare them for producing their own work outside of the university.
This will be the fourth time Dominique Adessa is participating in a show, either as a performer or choreographer. And this year, she is doing both; performing in a solo she choreographed; “hable con ella is about the mourning of a passed period of time and how the dancer works through the process to move forward. I’m excited to perform this solo which incorporates traditional flamenco as well as other Spanish dance techniques.” Adessa says.
An exploration of Yin Yang, being in liminal space, a piece inspired by the stage crew, this concert presents eleven new works in a broad range of styles and topics. With such a diverse range, there is something for everyone in “Vorsicht”.
