Covington-Rhode Senior Prize Winners: Viola Murphy and Josiah Garza
The UNM Department of Art is proud to announce the recipients of the 2025 Covington-Rhode Senior Prize. This award is made possible through the generosity of UNM Alumna Dr. Patricia Covington and Shari Rhode, whose love of art and commitment to supporting the next generation of artists continue to inspire our community. The Dept. of Art is deeply grateful for their confidence in the future of outstanding scholars.
This year, the Covington-Rhode Senior Prize has been awarded to Viola Murphy, with Josiah Garza receiving an Honorable Mention.

Viola: “Do you like the new you?” 48×48″, Oil on canvas, 2024
Viola shares: “I’ve found solace within painting during this very confusing time for me, both personally and with what is going on in the world. It feels nice to be seen, and I am incredibly grateful for this award and opportunity. Art has always enriched my life even when it felt like I didn’t really have anything. No matter what, I’ll continue to draw and paint because it’s simply just what I love to do — especially during a time when it feels like doing what you love is an act of resistance. I find comfort in knowing that even if it’s just a pen doodle on a napkin in a restaurant, I’ll always have my art practice, and no one can take that away from me.”

Josiah: “Impact Moment” 26x21x8″, Pigment Print Photograph, Wood, LED Lights, Foam, 2025
Josiah reflects: “Receiving an Honorable Mention for the Covington-Rhode Prize affirms the value of the work I’ve created through my experience at UNM. It reminds me that I’m on the right path — one shaped by growth, experimentation, and perseverance. This recognition encourages me to keep pushing my practice forward as I move from student to working artist.”
The Dept. of Art celebrates Viola and Josiah for their creativity and dedication to their art. Congratulations to both of you!
