Director of Interdisciplinary Film and Digital Media Program

The University of New Mexico invites applications for the Director of the Interdisciplinary Film and Digital Media (IFDM) Program, starting in August 2008. This administrative appointment will come with a tenure-track/tenured academic appointment at the rank of Associate or full Professor in one or more schools or colleges at UNM, depending on the candidate’s qualifications. IFDM is an integrated interdisciplinary academic and research program designed to give students the necessary critical, creative, and technical skills to apply digital technologies in innovative and productive ways. The program links existing strengths at UNM in the College of Fine Arts, School of Engineering, College of Arts & Sciences, Anderson School of Management, and other schools and colleges. It provides students an opportunity to prepare for careers in the converging fields of digital media in science, art, and technology. The interdisciplinary breadth of the curriculum and its focus on critical, creative, technical, and collaborative learning in the curriculum was recognized by Sony Imageworks which named the University of New Mexico a partner in the Imageworks Professional Academic Excellence Program (IPAX).
The successful candidate will be charged with supervising all aspects of the Interdisciplinary Film and Digital Media Program, including responsibility for managing its budget, faculty, staff, curriculum, instructional equipment and spaces, and outreach activities. In this position, the Director will chair the Interdisciplinary Film and Digital Media Faculty Council composed of faculty drawn from the schools and colleges participating in the program, and will report to an Executive Committee of deans from participating schools/colleges and the Vice President for Research, which has been charged by the Provost with overseeing the program and evaluating the Director’s performance: final reporting authority will remain with the Provost.
Should the candidate be qualified to receive a tenured academic appointment in Electronic Arts in the Department of Art and Art History in the College of Fine Arts, s/he could be considered for the Mesa del Sol Endowed Chair in Film and Digital Media. The Mesa del Sol Endowed Chair holder support s both the holder’s own research/creative work and the Interdisciplinary Film and Digital Media Program.
Minimum Qualifications:
- 1. Terminal Degree: PhD, MFA or other terminal degree;
- 2. A national record of publication, research, and creative activity in digital media;
- 3. Administrative experience in a university/college setting;
- 4. Leadership in education and curriculum development in Digital Media.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 1. Significant teaching experience in a university/college;
- 2. Demonstrated experience with digital media technologies;
- 3. Demonstrated experience in interdisciplinary teaching, curriculum development and career outcomes;
- 4. Demonstrated ability to develop funding from research grants, industry, private philanthropy and other sources;
- 5. A record of research, exhibition/production, and/or publication in the arena of new media, visualization, technology and performance, or the convergence of science, technology and art;
- 6. Experience/record of communication outreach to the public.
