ARTS Lab (Art, Research, Technology & Science Laboratory) supports the advancement of experimental artistic research and production at UNM in the area of emerging technologies. ARTS Lab is an innovative interdisciplinary center that forges dynamic relationships connecting Art, Science, Business and Technology. The vision of ARTS Lab is to become a key catalyst for the education and research that will grow and sustain an advanced media industry in New Mexico.
ARTS Lab is housed in the Digital Garage, a black box space outfitted to support performance, experimentation and research in digital graphics, sound and real-time immersive projection systems. The Garage’s major resources include a 15' diameter hemispheric domed projection surface built in partnership with the LodeStar Astronomy Center, a large-scaled motion capture system, and a sizable green-screen environment.
ARTS Lab promotes cross-disciplinary investigation through a variety of classes, events and research activities. Past courses include Topics in Computer Games, Advanced Graphics for Fulldome Production, Interactive Storytelling, and Visualization and the Art of Metaphor, to name a few. Past artists in residence and speakers include Warren Sack, Sawad Brooks, Gail Wight, Gronk, James Crutchfield’s Art & Science Laboratory, Eduardo Kac, Jennifer Hall, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, Meryl Meisler, Helen Thorington, Ken Perlin, Greg Niemeyer, and Chris Chafe.
