Heat Wave: Desert Photography Exhibit and Symposium was conceived as a traveling exhibition to foster community between graduate students working in the medium of photography in the Southwest. Graduate Students from the University of New Mexico, the University of Arizona, and Arizona State University were encouraged to enter their photo-based works. The show was juried by esteemed curator, Rod Slemmons. The exhibition will travel to galleries at each university in the Spring of 2013.
One of the benefits of being a graduate student is the opportunity to surround yourself with other artists whose work can challenge and inspire your own. Each of these universities is creating some of the best photography in the country, yet due to the long geographic distances there is relatively little communication between the students of these top ranked programs. We hope that this exhibition will encourage a greater sense of camaraderie and community between these students as well as give them the opportunity to highlight the work of each institution.
